Subject: FW: your letter to Commissioner Sinkevičius, proposal to develop an airport at Montijo/Samouco, Portugal

Dear Commissioner

I refer to your earlier letter (attached) on the subject of the proposal to construct a second Lisbon airport, and am most grateful to you for your detailed comments.

As I am sure you will be aware, the topic continues to arouse considerable concern in wetland conservation circles. A very well argued article on the subject has just been published in the journal “Wader Study”; I enclose a copy of the article, in case you are not already familiar with it.

The Curlew Forum would be extremely interested to know whether the Commission is proposing to take further initiatives in this very important issue which, as the article mentions, is probably the most important current threat to a major wetland site in the East Atlantic Flyway.

With best wishes
Mike Smart
